City Colleges of Chicago look to increase online learning.
Good afternoon, Chicago. I will be live-tweeting both the Committee on Academic Affairs and Student Services meeting as well as the Board of Trustees meeting.
12:26 PM Jun 1, 2023 CDT
The purpose of the Committee on Academic Affairs and Student Services is to oversee affairs and how they concern students. This committee is also tasked with maintaining the economic health of the city college ecosystem.
I was lucky enough to get here early and as such, I have beaten most of the board getting here. Now the board members have started to fill into the room, it is apparent there will be little to no public comment. There is only one other citizen here.
Five minutes until start time. Some of the board members are still not here. I wonder if there will be any absences.
The meeting has now begun. There are no absences among the board presidents. All seven of them are in attendance.
Almost forgot, the meeting’s agenda was made available before the meeting.
Here is the link:
The meeting begins with a quick roll call and the board wastes no time jumping into the resolutions that are being proposed. There was no discrepancy on the first 15 resolutions, but resolution 1.16 raised some concerns.
The board presidents are concerned with the increased cost of IT services. The operating system that the IT department uses is $1.6 million over market rate. Also one of the board members emphasizes that this is the 2nd time the IT Department has cost the City Colleges money.
Following the review of resolutions, the board moves onto reviewing personnel the report and resource development report. Following that, the board will now continue on to more reports surrounding the spending district-wide.
Reports 4.01 and 4.02 both come from Kennedy King College. There will be new renovations to their physical center and a new scoreboard in the gymnasium. The next couple of reports are district-wide proposals. Report 4.08 is to train faculty in online teaching.
It is the stated goal of this committee to expand the offerings of online learning provided by the City Colleges.
Now that all of the items have been reviewed and discussed. There is a vote to approve the resolutions proposed. The motion passes with only one vote of opposition.
For the past 30 minutes, there has been a recess. During this time, the board members socialize. The second meeting is slated to begin at 2pm. The regular monthly board of trustees meeting.
The regular board meeting will now begin. According to the board, newly arrived migrants will be housed at City Colleges.
Now, there is a presentation being given to the board of trustees via Zoom. The presentation is about how the City Colleges has to be more inclusive. There is a lack of gender neutral restrooms. Inclusivity is a stated goal of City Colleges of Chicago, so maybe this will improve.
Resolution 1.15 will be voted on separately. The other resolutions are approved via an all-encompassing vote. This resolution is to appreciate and recognize the outstanding work of Walter E. Massey.
The committee will now hold a closed session. The board presidents are meeting privately, while the rest of the committee waits alongside me.
